sfumato is pushing the limits of abstract painting in the digital age. In a time of complete virtualization of knowledge, work and monetary flows, painting finally can be in the same state of flux beyond the constraints of a physical material. The slow unfolding of the projection seems to anticipate the unexpected passage of time of the pandemic, but was developed by Seidel as a hybridisation of the perceptual time courses between film and painting. The title refers to one of the four canonical painting modes of Renaissance art, a technique that emphasizes soft transition between colours and tones. By taking this concept of blurring clear lines and borders the spectral “all-over” composition offers a myriad of subtle gradations and erratic shifts of focal planes. sfumato unleashes a sublime moment of pure abstraction expanding the ideas of painting into an asymmetrical orchestration of slow-motion video paintings.

Robert Seidel is interested in pushing the boundaries of abstracted beauty through cinematographic approaches, as well as ones drawn from science and technology. His projections, installations and experimental films have been shown in numerous international festivals and museums such as the Palais des Beaux-Arts Lille, Art Center Nabi Seoul, ZKM Karlsruhe and MOCA Taipei. His work was honored with various prizes, including the KunstFilmBiennale Honorary Award and the Visual Music Award.
